Sponges as bioindicators for microparticulate pollutants?

چکیده

Amongst other threats, the world’s oceans are faced with man-made pollution, including an increasing number of microparticulate pollutants. Sponges, aquatic filter-feeding animals, able to incorporate fine foreign particles, and thus may be a potential bioindicator for To address this question, 15 coral reef demosponges sampled around Bangka Island (North Sulawesi, Indonesia) were analyzed nature their particle content using traditional histological methods, advanced light microscopy, Raman spectroscopy. Sampled sponges accumulated embedded very sediment fraction (<200 μm), absent in surrounding sand, ectosome (outer epithelia) spongin fibers (skeletal elements), which was confirmed by two-photon microscopy. A total 34 different types identified, degraded products, i.e., polystyrene, particulate cotton, titanium dioxide blue-pigmented incorporated eight specimens at concentrations between 91 612 particle/g dry sponge tissue. As can weigh several hundreds grams, we conservatively extrapolate that on average 10,000 pollutants The uptake however, appears independent material, suggests fluctuation material ratios is due spatial variation microparticles. Therefore, particle-bearing have strong biomonitor pollutants, such as microplastics industrial products.

Staphylinid beetles as bioindicators

The family Staphylinidae is one of the largest beetle families and is distributed worldwide in almost all types of ecosystems. The morpho-ecological characteristics of staphylinid beetle adults and developmental stages are summarized, and features pertaining to their potential use as bioindicators are highlighted. Methods of study and practical examples are given for the application of staphyli...

Macrophytes as bioindicators

Submerged macrophytes respond to changes in the nutrient concentrations in their environment. In contrast to diatoms e.g., submerged macrophytes are capable of taking up nutrients from both the sediment pore water and the overlying water. Therefore, macrophytes can provide a more comprehensive assessment of river ecosystems. Two methods using submerged macrophytes to assess and monitor changes ...

Waterbirds as Bioindicators of Environmental Conditions

One of the aims of monitoring is to provide information for ecological assessment, which can provide early warning of changes that could negatively affect species or ecosystems (Burger 2006). Since it is impractical to monitor all biological and physical components, a few of them can be used as indicators of wider conditions. Biological components chosen with this aim are called bioindicators (...
